There's absolutely no reason to run a beam that's 60'x7 elements long when you can run a stock Maco 5 element.
    actually, MMM's beam is a 8 or 9 element, and 96' long....75'up.

And is still totally dependent upon Mother Nature's mood at any given moment.....

This is the kind of discussion where people learn things about this hobby....plain ole friendly, knowledgeable discussion !!!

Can't say I've ever tuned anything on the CB band that had more than four elements... The additional lengths that go along with the larger antennas (and associated elements) have diminishing returns as you add more, so as the antenna gets larger, it takes an even bigger increase to get the same amount of additional gain. I could see five elements for someone that is serious, although I would likely suggest phasing two three element antennas first...

I would disagree that running additional power is the same as using a larger antenna, after all, if you could hear the remote station with a larger antenna and not the smaller antenna, no amount of power will make you hear any better with the smaller antenna...

That being said, as we speak I have a 22 element 2 meter yagi in my basement in pieces right now that needs some work. What can I say, it was free... It will be fun to play with sometime....

I have nothing against Maco, their antennas work just fine, I own two of them myself...

I don't really care about them unless there is someone on that channel that is splattering across my receive... There are some real nice guys that hang out in the minor leagues (as I call the channel), but there are just as many that are full of themselves. I don't hate them or anything, they are just a different type of enthusiast. I hope that one day some of them will come around, but if they are happy, I'm happy as long as they aren't bothering me...

Either these guys know their stuff, or they know enough to find the person who does. And that person who knows their stuff has a very good grasp of the theory behind how the antenna system works.

Mobiles are the most common, and also the most disadvantaged antenna systems out there, especially for HF. Its tough when even with the largest vehicles out there, and a properly set up antenna, your still loosing 75% of both the transmitted and received signals to ground losses at CB frequencies, even more for smaller vehicles. Unfortunately that is just the nature of the beast. Get good at mobile use, specifically those local distance and DX contacts, and your good to go.

When it comes to building antennas, I would just say build something, it can be simple and cheap like a dipole or a T2LT, just to get the experience. If you need help, ask, there are many of us that will be happy to help.

I agree that very few people benefit from getting these big yagi antennas, and I would add that even fewer benefit from getting an amp that is larger than 100 watts. That first 100 watts seems to make more of a difference than going from 100 to 400 watts. Its that happy medium if you will. Sure you can put more power out, but how much of it do you really need to make most of your contacts? I think many people would be surprised at what can be done with far less than they use...

I had an 108C before I actually knew what I was getting into, although I had the tower and heliax to go to 144'!! Wasn't much into DX mostly local talking to and from neighboring states of Louisiana!! Now I've gained a bit more knowledge about our hobby a 105C will do just fine!!

I always wondered what MMM does for work/job. I assumed he must be a millionaire cause he talks during the middle of the day all the way into the evening. Does anybody know?
